The National Museum of Photography “Marubi,” based in Shkodër, is dedicated to preserving, studying, and interpreting Albania’s photographic heritage. It evolved from the “Marubi” Phototheque into a contemporary museum operating under international standards.

Its origins trace back to 1858, when Italian photographer Pietro Marubbi settled in Shkodër and opened the first photo studio in Albania in 1865, introducing photography as both an art and a documentary tool. He trained Mati and Kel Kodheli; after Mati’s death, Kel continued the studio, later followed by his son Gegë Marubi, who studied in France.

Over a century, three generations documented Albania’s life, creating a unique visual archive. In 1970, Gegë Marubi donated it to the state. Today, the museum holds about 500,000 negatives and is among the most important archives in Southeast Europe. Opened in 2016, it was shortlisted for EMYA 2017 and added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 2025.

Il Museo Nazionale della Fotografia “Marubi”, con sede a Scutari (Shkodër), è dedicato alla conservazione, allo studio e alla valorizzazione del patrimonio fotografico albanese. Da Fototeca “Marubi” si è evoluto in un museo contemporaneo che opera secondo standard internazionali.

Le sue origini risalgono al 1858, quando il fotografo italiano Pietro Marubbi si stabilì a Scutari e, nel 1865, aprì il primo studio fotografico in Albania, introducendo la fotografia sia come forma d’arte sia come strumento documentario. Marubbi formò i fotografi Mati e Kel Kodheli; dopo la morte di Mati, Kel proseguì l’attività dello studio, successivamente portata avanti dal figlio Gegë Marubi, che studiò in Francia. Nel corso di oltre un secolo, tre generazioni di fotografi documentarono la vita in Albania, creando un archivio visivo unico. Nel 1970, Gegë Marubi ne fece donazione allo Stato.

Oggi il museo conserva circa 500.000 negativi ed è considerato uno degli archivi fotografici più importanti dell’Europa sud-orientale. Inaugurato nel 2016, è stato selezionato tra i finalisti dell’EMYA 2017 (European Museum of the Year Award) ed è stato inserito nel Registro della Memoria del Mondo dell’UNESCO nel 2025.

THE TOUR / LA VISITA

For the first time, the Marubi National Museum of Photography joins Archivi Aperti, an initiative promoted by Rete Fotografia and dedicated to the study, appreciation, and promotion of photographic heritage. Marubi’s participation also marks the first extension of the initiative beyond Italy, bringing Albania into the network of participating photographic institutions and archives.

As part of the 12th edition, entitled “Reflected Identities: Society through Photography,” the Marubi Museum presents a programme of three events that place the photographic archive at the centre of reflection: as a space for research and interpretation, as a record of historical and social transformations, and as a heritage resource open to the public.

Three moments — an exhibition, a public conversation, and the opening of the archive — come together in a programme that approaches photography not simply as an image, but as a document, a form of memory, and a source for research. Through its participation in Archivi Aperti 2026, the Marubi Museum offers an opportunity to encounter the archive from within and to reflect on the ways in which photographic heritage is preserved, studied, interpreted, and reactivated in the present.

Public conversation with Dr. Luçjan Bedeni, Director of the Marubi Museum, and Noel Mosi, Head of the Department of Conservation and Collections Management.
An open conversation on the life of the Marubi Archive and the transformations that have shaped it throughout its history. From the early practices of registering and organising the photographic collection, through the transition from a private studio to a public institution, to contemporary processes of cataloguing, digitisation, and conservation, the conversation proposes an understanding of the archive as a living entity in continuous transformation. It is a history in which the preservation of heritage intersects with research, technology, and new forms of access to and interpretation of photography.

Per la prima volta, il Museo Nazionale di Fotografia Marubi aderisce ad Archivi Aperti, un’iniziativa promossa da Rete Fotografia e dedicata allo studio, alla valorizzazione e alla promozione del patrimonio fotografico. La partecipazione del Marubi segna anche la prima estensione dell’iniziativa oltre i confini italiani, inserendo l’Albania nella rete delle istituzioni e degli archivi fotografici aderenti.

Nell’ambito della dodicesima edizione, intitolata “Identità riflesse: la società attraverso la fotografia”, il Museo Marubi presenta un programma di tre eventi che pongono l’archivio fotografico al centro della riflessione: come spazio di ricerca e interpretazione, come testimonianza di trasformazioni storiche e sociali e come risorsa patrimoniale aperta al pubblico.

Tre momenti — una mostra, un incontro pubblico e l’apertura dell’archivio — si uniscono in un programma che si accosta alla fotografia non semplicemente come immagine, ma come documento, forma di memoria e fonte di ricerca. Attraverso la sua partecipazione ad Archivi Aperti 2026, il Museo Marubi offre l’opportunità di scoprire l’archivio dall’interno e di riflettere sulle modalità con cui il patrimonio fotografico viene conservato, studiato, interpretato e riattivato nel presente.

Una conversazione aperta sull’Archivio Marubi e sulle trasformazioni che lo hanno segnato nel corso della sua storia. Dalle prime pratiche di registrazione e organizzazione del fondo fotografico, passando per il passaggio da studio privato a istituzione pubblica, fino ai processi contemporanei di catalogazione, digitalizzazione e conservazione, l’incontro propone una visione dell’archivio come entità viva e in continua trasformazione. Una storia in cui la salvaguardia del patrimonio si intreccia con la ricerca, la tecnologia e le nuove forme di accesso e interpretazione della fotografia.
